Academic Services
Students succeed at Cushing, in part, because
they are integral members of a strong support network in
the classroom and beyond. Regardless of which courses students
take, many levels of academic support are always available
to help ensure their understanding and achievement.
Academic advising is the central element of
Cushing's support structure. Every faculty member is assigned
six to eight advisees, and they meet with each student weekly
to discuss academic and other progress. More informal sessions
are also held as needed.
Daily extra help adds to the Cushing support
network. Faculty members are available every day to give
one-on-one help to students who stop by. This open-door
policy is representative of life at the Academy.
Study Skills instruction is integrated into
each class allowing teachers to emphasize the skills essential
for success in their content areas. This helps students
to improve study habits and ultimately, their ability to
learn. Organization, textbook reading strategies, note taking
and more are taught in the context they are used, thus assisting
students in seeing their relevance, application and efficacy.
