Students, faculty join forces for Locks of Love | 
05/05/2008While many consider a short haircut for the summer months, members of the Cushing community are heading to the salon for a different reason: Locks of Love. Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss from any diagnosis. Most of the children helped by Locks of Love have lost their hair due to a medical condition called alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. The prostheses provided help to restore their self-esteem and their confidence, enabling them to face the world and their peers. The minimum donation requirement is 10 inches. Numerous students have already donated; others have pledged to do so and are still growing. In a recent assembly, faculty member Patrick Ahn announced a special challenge – if he could raise $500 from the Cushing community for the organization, for one week he would wear his hair in pigtails, the signature hairstyle of his young daughters. Ahn has been growing his hair since January 2007. Ahn reached his goal last Wednesday and began wearing his hair in pigtails on Friday, May 2. In fact, he is currently over $900 and is now aiming for $1000, the collection goal that will allow Cushing to individually sponsor one child's prosthetic hairpiece. Full Story... |
