Just off Route 2 and tucked away in the former Fort Devens, sits New England Studios. The massive state-of-the-art TV and movie production facility, which opened in 2014, is quickly gaining traction as a staple in the Commonwealth and notoriety around the world. At its core: Chris Byers ’82, NE Studios’ founder and Director of Marketing and Operations.
On Tuesday, April 16, students in Mr. Bala’s Senior English and Mr. Gebhardt’s Filmmaking classes made the short trip east to view the complex, which is currently home to the second season of Hulu’s “Castle Rock,” among others. While the grounds were relatively quiet that day, it was an opportunity to take in the magnitude of such a production and to gain valuable insight from a fellow Penguin.
As he shared the story of his journey to establish the first Hollywood-class studio in the region, Chris advised students to “learn to recognize and harness your fear. It’s what will get you through the door… Be proficient in technology. Educate yourself. Know the companies. Know why they do what they do. This work will never lapse; there will be work forever.”
Reflecting on his Cushing experience, Chris stressed the value of connections and relationships.
“Ten years from now you’ll look back and you’ll see those relationships pay dividends. Cushing is an amazing place and an amazing opportunity. Whatever you aspire to do in life, Cushing will give you a base that you won’t get anywhere else.”
Many thanks to Chris for taking the time to share this exciting endeavor with our students. We look forward to seeing what’s next on the screen!
